# Install Screencap

Use the public downloads below. Do not clone a private repository or install the unrelated screencap package from PyPI.

Check the operating system and CPU first. macOS requires Apple silicon and macOS 14+. Windows requires x64. The Ubuntu package needs x86-64 and glibc 2.35 or later (Ubuntu 22.04 or newer). It records on X11 (Xorg) sessions, and on GNOME Wayland, which is tested on Ubuntu 26.04 only. ARM and other Wayland desktops are not supported. Keep existing recordings and do not interrupt an active recording.

## macOS

macOS 14+ · Apple silicon

Download: https://screencap.sh/download/macos

Run in Terminal:

```
curl -fL https://screencap.sh/download/macos -o "$HOME/Downloads/Screencap.dmg"
open "$HOME/Downloads/Screencap.dmg"
```

Drag Screencap into Applications, then open it. Allow screen recording and accessibility when asked.

## Windows

Windows · x64 · unsigned preview

Download: https://screencap.sh/download/windows

Run in PowerShell:

```
$installer = Join-Path $env:TEMP 'screencap-setup.exe'
Invoke-WebRequest 'https://screencap.sh/download/windows' -OutFile $installer
Start-Process -FilePath $installer -Wait
```

Follow the installer, then open Screencap. This preview is unsigned, so Windows may ask you to confirm the publisher.

## Ubuntu

Ubuntu 22.04+ · x64 · X11 or GNOME Wayland · CLI preview

Download: https://screencap.sh/download/ubuntu

Run in Terminal:

```
curl -fsSL https://storage.googleapis.com/screencap-releases/releases-linux/install.sh | SCREENCAP_INSTALL_METHOD=binary SCREENCAP_DIST_URL=https://storage.googleapis.com/screencap-releases/releases-linux sh
```

On an X11 (Xorg) session, open a new terminal in the desktop and run screencap serve --install, then screencap start. Run screencap stop to finish. The command screencap serve --install also adds a Screencap icon to the top bar. It shows whether recording is on and can start or stop it. On X11 recordings stay on this computer and need no account. On GNOME Wayland (Ubuntu 26.04), run screencap setup --wayland once and log out and back in if requested, then run screencap login and screencap start --both and approve screen sharing. Use --local to keep recordings on this computer.

## Finish setup

Let the user handle installer, operating-system permission, logout/login and account prompts. Do not bypass them. Verify the installed app or CLI opens successfully. Ubuntu supports video, keyboard, mouse, app/window events and optional accessibility trees. Run screencap settings --set accessibility_capture=true to enable trees; coverage depends on the application. On X11, screencap setup offers to turn on accessibility for Qt, Firefox and Chromium apps, and recordings stay on the computer with no account. On GNOME Wayland, --both uses local recording and authenticated cloud upload; --local stays on the computer. Windows and Ubuntu are previews. The browser extension and Android app do not have public installers yet.
